Before Trying A Class

Yoga is a safe form of exercise for older adults, but all movement carries some risk of injury. Injury risk can be greatly reduced by doing the following:

  1. Ensure you have a clear, safe space for exercise (no throw rugs to trip over, no clutter on the floor, consider exercising in a room without small children or pets)

  2. Always listen to your body

    • Don’t move into positions that increase pain levels

    • Only practice poses that you feel safe performing

    • Use props such as a chair for balance support if needed

  3. Consult your doctor before participating in the exercises if you have had any of the following:

    • any cardiac abnormalities requiring hospitalization within the last 6 months

    • diagnosed change in neurological condition within the last 6 months, or

    • surgical interventions within the last 6 months
